Disowned

An electric storm strikes two brothers during a midnight walk, and only one emerges unchanged. Tristan begins to feel himself falling upward. Within days, he is permanently inverted, his body rebelling against every law of nature, walking on his hands with the ground above and the sky below. His brother Jim and their companion Alice watch helplessly as Tristan becomes something neither fully human nor entirely alien, a man trapped in an endless freefall that never ends. The world treats him as a curiosity, then a monster, and finally, inevitably, a commodity. Tristan finds refuge in the only place that will have him: the stage, performing his impossibility for crowds who pay to witness his suffering. But inverted gravity is only the beginning of what has changed. Early science fiction at its most unsettling, this is a meditation on what happens when the body becomes incomprehensible to everyone around it, including yourself.
