Die Republik Des Südkreuzes: Novellen

A forgotten masterpiece of early dystopian fiction, Bryusov's collection imagines a civilization rotting from within. The Republic of the South Cross rose on steel and ambition, building Sternenstadt: a city of electric lights and hidden surveillance, where technological progress masks a tyrannical core. Then came mania contradicens, a strange mental plague that hijacks the will, forcing its victims to act against their own desires. As the epidemic spreads, the vibrant metropolis descends into chaos. The boundary between what people want and what they do dissolves. Loved ones become strangers to themselves. Bryusov, a founding figure of Russian Symbolism, writes with unsettling prescience: a society where compulsion replaces choice, where the mind turns traitor, and where the machinery of progress reveals itself as a machine for control. This is speculative fiction before the genre had a name, dark and psychologically acute, exploring how easily civilization's thin veneer cracks when the very act of wanting becomes dangerous.
