Diablo Cojuelo
Diablo Cojuelo, written by Luis Vélez de Guevara in the early 17th century, follows Don Cleofás, a student fleeing justice, who accidentally releases a mischievous devil from a bottle. This devil, known as Diablo Cojuelo, lifts the roofs of Madrid to reveal the vices and deceptions of its inhabitants. The work is notable for its satirical and picaresque elements, showcasing the devil as a playful spirit rather than a purely evil entity, and is considered one of the early examples of Spanish literature that blends humor with social commentary.
