Det Går An

A summer morning at Stockholm's Riddarholmskyrkan becomes the unlikely setting for an encounter that defies social convention. When Sara Videbeck, the independent daughter of a glassmaker from Lidköping, boards a steamboat bound for the archipelago, she catches the eye of a sergeant intrigued by her beauty and quick tongue. What begins as curious observation transforms into conversation marked by humor, misunderstanding, and the electric friction of two people from radically different worlds. As the boat cuts through the morning water, Almqvist dissects the class distinctions and unspoken rules that govern Swedish society with a wit that feels remarkably modern for 1838. Sara is no passive heroine waiting to be chosen; she speaks her mind, challenges expectations, and refuses to perform the demureness her station supposedly demands. The novel's radical gesture lies not in melodrama but in its quiet insistence that compatibility might matter more than rank. A pioneering voice in Swedish literature, Almqvist uses this brief journey to ask whether love, or at least a workable life together, can exist outside the boundaries society draws around us.
