Der Weibsteufel: Drama in Fünf Akten

The title announces its verdict: the devil wears a skirt. Karl Schönherr's 1914 drama tears open a marriage already bleeding, set in the harsh Alpine borderlands where smuggling is the only arithmetic that adds up to survival. On their wedding anniversary, a sickly husband presents his wife with contraband, the fruits of his illegal trade. They dream of a house, a real house, but the mountains are cold and the border guards are hungry for someone to catch. When a young guard arrives at their door, the geometry of loyalty shifts. Who will betray whom, and for what? The wife stands at the center of this powder keg, her cunning either the family's salvation or its ruin. Written in raw Tiroler dialect, this is Austrian naturalism at its most brutal: no sentiment, only the desperate arithmetic of poverty, love, and the lengths we go to survive. The play seethes with a dark erotic tension, examining what happens when marriage becomes a contract signed in smuggled goods and whispered lies.
