Dalrymple's Equation

Dalrymple's Equation

Paul W. Fairman

Science, Science Fiction, Mystery & Detective, Fiction

Two homicide detectives are called to a bar on Tenth Avenue where a young man lies dead under impossible circumstances. The case should be straightforward, but something is deeply wrong: the witnesses lie without knowing they're lying, the evidence points everywhere and nowhere, and the only witness who seems to be telling the truth is a strange, quiet man named Tennyson Dalrymple, who claims to have come from somewhere that doesn't quite exist. Dalrymple offers the detectives a new way of solving crimes: not with intuition or forensics, but with mathematics. His "equation" can apparently predict human behavior, map the hidden connections between victims and killers, and reveal patterns invisible to ordinary minds. But as the detectives delve deeper into the case and deeper into Dalrymple's world, they begin to question whether the equation reveals truth or creates it, and whether their witness is a genius or something far stranger. A 1950s science fiction noir that predates the genre-blending craze by decades, this is a murder mystery that asks how we know what's real, and whether certainty is even possible.
