Cupid's Whirligig

Edward Sharpham

Cupid's Whirligig is a gleefully anarchic city comedy from the golden age of English theatre, where every character seems to be scheming, cuckolding, or cross-dressing their way through London. Sir Timothy Troublesome, a knight whose jealousy has curdled into genuine madness, takes the radical step of castrating himself to ensure his wife bears no heirs of his blood. Meanwhile, the youthful Lord Nonsuch disguises himself as a servant in the Troublesome household, driven by nothing more noble than a burning desire for the lady of the house. When Cupid himself descends from Olympus to unleash a love spell across the city, the results are predictably catastrophic: one citizen loves another, who loves another, who loves yet another, until desire circles back on itself like some divine practical joke. The play whirls through misunderstandings, misdirection, and more than a few very modern anxieties about fidelity and reputation, held together by a clever servant who tries desperately to untangle the romantic knot before everyone ruins their lives. Sharpham's play endures because it captures something timeless about love's absurdity: the way desire makes fools of us all, regardless of station or good sense.
