Crowded Out! and Other Sketches

A haunting collection that opens with an unnamed artist in London, toiling in obscurity while haunted by memories of a lost love named Hortense. He dreams of recognition for his opera, but the vast city offers only indifference. The sketches then shift to Canadian colonial life, where characters brave wilderness, first snows, and the isolating rigors of frontier existence. Harrison captures the peculiar ache of displacement - whether pining for a distant beloved or bidding farewell to England for the "long cold Canadian winter." These are impressions rather than narratives, fragments of colonial experience seen through the eyes of someone intimately acquainted with both old world elegance and new world harshness. The writing carries a melancholic beauty, particularly in its London opening, where longing and artistic ambition intertwine. For readers interested in early Canadian women's writing and the transnational anxieties of the late Victorian era.
