Cranford (version 2)
Cranford, written by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell and published between 1851 and 1853, is a humorous portrayal of a small market town in Victorian England, primarily inhabited by respectable ladies. The narrative explores their daily lives, secrets, and social dynamics as they navigate the arrival of new residents and societal changes. This work was originally serialized in Charles Dickens’ Journal Household Words and includes a sequel, The Cage at Cranford, published a decade later. Gaskell's light-hearted depiction of genteel society contrasts with her more serious works like Mary Barton and North and South.
