Colloquium Heptaplomeres De Rerum Sublimium Arcanis Abditis

In 1596, Jean Bodin assembled seven figures around a table: a Catholic, a Lutheran, a Calvinist, an Orthodox Christian, a Muslim, a Jew, and a skeptic. What unfolds is the West's earliest sustained experiment in religious pluralism, a daring dialogue where each speaker must defend their deepest convictions against six rivals. The setting is a Venetian palace; the stakes are nothing less than truth itself. Over five days, they debate the immortality of the soul, the nature of God, the relationship between faith and reason, and whether any single tradition can claim monopoly on the divine. Bodin, who secretly harbored skeptic tendencies that would have condemned him in the Wars of Religion, lets no position emerge victorious. Instead, he reveals something more radical: that sincere disagreement, honestly engaged, may be the closest we can come to wisdom. This is not a polemic but a performance of intellectual courage, a book that asks whether peaceful coexistence requires first accepting that we may all be wrong.
