Claire: The Blind Love of a Blind Hero, by a Blind Author

A blind man survives a shipwreck. A blind author wrote about him. That fact alone makes this 1919 novel worth your attention. Leslie Burton Blades, writing from direct experience, drops Lawrence Gordon into turbulent waters during a fierce storm and forces him to fight for survival despite having never seen the ocean that threatens to kill him. He washes ashore injured and alone until he discovers Claire, also wounded, also stranded. What follows is a story about two people stripped of everything except each other, building shelter and sustenance from nothing, and discovering something profound in the process. The philosophical conversations that emerge between them about survival, connection, and what it means to truly know another person feel earned because Blades understood viscerally what it means to navigate a world designed for sighted people. This isn't a romance of grand gestures but of practical mutual dependence that slowly becomes something deeper. For readers interested in early 20th century fiction that CENTERS disability rather than treating it as tragedy, this is a fascinating artifact.
