Christmas at Thompson Hall
When Colonel and Mrs. Brown arrive at Thompson Hall in Paris for Christmas, the household is already thick with tension. Mrs. Brown once loved the master of the house, Harry Thompson, before choosing duty and a different man. Now all three must navigate the awkward geometry of old flames and present respectability under one roof. But the evening takes a turn when a sound in the night sends Colonel Brown stumbling through darkened corridors toward what he believes is his wife's room, only to find himself in furious, bewildered combat with the very man his wife once loved. What follows is Trollope at his most delicious: a comedy of errors that exposes the tender wounds beneath Victorian propriety, and a meditation on jealousy, honor, and the stories we tell ourselves about the past. By morning, truths emerge that are more kindness than cruelty, because this is Trollope's Christmas gift to his readers: even the most painful confessions can heal.
