Bowling Catalog E

This is not a novel. It is a portal. Produced by the Narragansett Machine Company in the late 1800s, this catalog documents the meticulous craft of building bowling alleys at a time when the game was transitioning from outdoor lawn bowls to the indoor timber lanes America would make its own. Here you will find the specifications for 'Standard' and 'Adjustable' alleys, the careful hierarchies of maple and pine, the engineering of beds and sleepers and sills. But beyond the technical drawings lies something richer: a snapshot of American industrialization, when a company could publish a thirty-page treatise on the proper angle of a bowling lane and believe, genuinely, that this mattered. Low posts for improved visibility. Adjustable beds that could be leveled. These innovations seem quaint now, but they represent the same impulse that would eventually give us the interstate highway and the skyscraper. If you have ever rolled a ball down a lane and watched the pins scatter, this strange little catalog reveals the material history behind that moment of chaos and satisfaction.
