Big Game: A Story for Girls

George de Horne, Mrs. Vaizey

Adventure, British Literature, Children & Young Adult Reading, Novels

It's 1890, and Margot Vane is watching her brother Ronald receive his umpteenth rejection letter for his poetry. Their father has had enough: Ronald must abandon his foolish literary ambitions and take up a proper profession. But Margot has seen her brother's soul in his verses, and she refuses to let his talent die in a drawer of blue envelopes. So she devises a scheme as bold as it is improper: they'll travel to a remote Scottish hotel where the most influential poetry editor in England spends his summers. It's a long shot, it violates every rule of proper young ladies, and it might very well ruin them. Margot doesn't care. She's tired of watching her brother suffer in silence while the world tells him he's worthless. What follows is part rescue mission, part coming-of-age, and entirely a story about what happens when one person believes in another enough to break all the rules. The prose sparkles with Victorian wit, the sibling dynamic crackles with genuine warmth, and Margot emerges as exactly the kind of heroine who does precisely what she wants, consequences be damned. For anyone who wanted to be the person who fought for the dreamer in their life.
