This is the darkest of Dickens' Christmas stories, a haunting meditation on memory, grief, and what we lose when we try to escape pain. Mr. Redlaw, a chemistry professor haunted by past sorrow, is offered a terrible gift by a phantom: the ability to erase painful memories from his own mind and the minds of those around him. At first, this seems merciful. But without their grief, his students become strangers; without her sorrows, the woman he loves becomes someone else entirely. Dickens explores what happens when we try to divorce ourselves from the experiences that make us human. The ghost's bargain promises relief but delivers something closer to death. This is a story about the terrible sweetness of forgetting, and why some wounds should never be healed.
