At the resort hotel, genteel guests gossip as Maud Atkinson and her flamboyant mother arrive; Maud’s sultry song captivates the room—and especially Ove—while Margareta withdraws in hurt silence. Soon after, Arne daydreams on the heath; Maud joins him, hints at a hard past, deflects his shy confession, and their walk ends under Ove’s cold, controlling gaze, signaling the emotional tensions to come.
