Australia Revenged

A forgotten Victorian melodrama with a premise that still shocks: the Detlij Club, a secret society of jilted men who gather to plot vengeance against the women who wronged them. When the beautiful Amy Johnson falls under the spell of the charismatic villain Villiers Wyckliffe, she becomes another trophy in his collection of destroyed hearts, until her tragic death sets her devoted lover Reginald Morris on a path of cold, calculated retribution. Written in the late 19th century by pseudonymous Australians "Boomerang," the novel functions as both a ripping revenge tale and a sharp critique of Victorian society's treatment of women, while also satirizing colonial power structures. The characters may be types, but they remain uncomfortably recognizable: the manipulators who boast of their conquests, the broken hearts left in their wake, and the men who refuse to let go of their wounds. This is for readers who enjoy Gothic melodrama with teeth, and who wonder what revenge looks like when it becomes a gentlemanly sport.
