Aus Trotzkopf's Ehe

Ilse has always been trouble. Spirited, hot-tempered, perpetually hungry for adventure, she charmed everyone in the village as a girl, and she hasn't changed one bit now that she's a wife and mother. When fire devastates the homes of the poorest families in town, Ilse doesn't wait for the men to organize relief. She rallies the women, mounts a theater production, and throws herself into the cause with characteristic ferocity. But beneath her energy lies something rarer: a woman who refuses to let marriage and motherhood flatten her into quiet domesticity. Originally published in 1917, this German classic follows Ilse through the small triumphs and daily battles of her vibrant life, her children's成长, her community's struggles, and the eternal negotiation between who she is and who the world wants her to be. Warm, funny, and surprisingly现代 in its portrait of female stubbornness as a virtue.
