As It Was

This is 1950s science fiction at its most unapologetic: a safari to another world where the game can think back. Pritchard leads his team of hunters onto the surface of Thisbe II, a planet where every ecosystem teems with creatures stranger and more dangerous than the last. But as the kills pile up, uncomfortable questions emerge about what separates hunters from prey, and whether humanity's oldest instincts have any place among truly alien minds. The prose is direct, the creatures feel genuinely alien, and the ethical weight sneaks up on you. For readers who want their SF with a pulse and a conscience, or who wonder how the golden age writers grappled with the idea that we might not always be the most intelligent thing in the room.
