Antony Gray,—gardener

Antony Gray tends his garden in the African sun, content in his modest existence far from English fog and complication. When a letter arrives announcing he has inherited a significant estate from a distant relative, Nicholas Danver, his quiet life fractures. The catch: he must take on the man's identity, his debts, and his shadowed past. Nicholas, we learn, was a reclusive figure who spent his final years in a grey house, wrestling with decisions that haunt him, none more pressing than the plight of Job Grantley, a desperate tenant facing eviction. What begins as a straightforward inheritance becomes a philosophical maze: who are we when the world insists we become someone else? The novel moves between Antony's sun-drenched simplicity and Nicholas's labyrinthine conscience, building toward a transformation that asks what we owe to the dead, to ourselves, and to the strangers whose fates we hold in our hands. This is a quiet, unsettling meditation on identity, mercy, and the strange inheritances we cannot refuse.
