Angèle Méraud

''Angèle Méraud'' by Charles Mérouvel is a novel written in the late 19th century. The story is set against the backdrop of rural France, focusing on the lives of its characters that include Maurice Chazolles, a wealthy landowner, and his family, as well as his close friend Valéry Duvernet, who is an aspiring politician. The narrative seems to explore themes of ambition, happiness in domestic life, and social critiques of both rural and urban settings. The opening of the novel introduces us to a small French town with its ordinary residents and a few key characters arriving by train. Maurice Chazolles is described as a charming and prosperous landowner who is eager to reunite with his friend Valéry Duvernet, a city man and a future politician. Their conversations hint at contrasting views on ambition and rural life. As they journey through the countryside to Chazolles’ home, called Val-Dieu, the setting is vividly painted as idyllic and prosperous, foreshadowing the familial and social dynamics that will unfold throughout the story. The depiction of their close-knit community also sets up a potential tension between the simplicity of rural existence and the allure of political ambitions and urban life.
