Anarchism

Paul Eltzbacher's 1900 masterpiece is the definitive scholarly excavation of anarchist thought. Rather than imposing a single definition, Eltzbacher lets the movement speak through its architects: three-quarters of this book consists of carefully classified quotations from seven revolutionary minds (Godwin, Proudhon, Stirner, Bakunin, Kropotkin, Tucker, and Tolstoy), while his penetrating commentary stitches their ideas into a coherent intellectual lineage. He examines where each thinker stands on law, the state, and property, revealing both their profound agreements and their productive contradictions. The chronological arrangement traces the evolution from philosophical individualism through collectivism to anarcho-communism, capturing a movement that would reshape revolutions from Paris to Spain. This is intellectual archaeology at its finest: rigorous, systematic, and surprisingly gripping. For anyone seeking to understand one of history's most provocative political philosophies not through polemic but through the voices of its architects, this remains the essential foundation.
