Age of Reason (version 3)
Thomas Paine's devastating critique of organized religion was written by a dying man in the middle of a revolution. While imprisoned in Paris during the Reign of Terror, with a guillotine hovering over his head and no Bible at hand, Paine set out to dismantle the foundations of Christian theology using the Bible itself as his only weapon. He demonstrates that the books of both Testaments were written by unknown authors, falsely attributed to figures like Moses and the Apostles, and contain internal contradictions that prove they cannot be the literal word of God. For Paine, the only true revelation of the divine is the natural world itself and the individual human conscience. This is philosophy as polemic, reason as rebellion, and one of the most audacious intellectual attacks ever mounted against religious orthodoxy.
