Aether and Gravitation

Before Einstein rewrote physics, scientists grappled with a fundamental puzzle: how does gravity pull objects through the void of empty space? Hooper enters this centuries-old debate with a rigorous defense of the aether, that hypothetical substance once believed to fill the universe. He systematically dismantles Newton's concept of "action at a distance" - the idea that objects can influence each other across nothing - arguing instead that gravitational attraction requires a medium, something material or quasi-material to carry the force. Through carefully reasoned philosophical rules for constructing scientific hypotheses, Hooper builds his case that the aether must possess properties akin to matter to explain not just gravity but the full range of physical phenomena. The book stands as a remarkable time capsule of pre-Einstein physics, capturing a moment when the greatest minds in science still believed the aether might be the key to understanding the universe's deepest structure. For anyone curious about how physics once imagined itself, this is a窗口 into an intellectual world on the verge of transformation.
