A Terrible Secret: A Novel

A young woman stands accused of a terrible crime she did not commit. This is the electrifying territory of A Terrible Secret, an early sensation novel from 1874 that pulses with the anxieties of Victorian England. Inez Catheron, a woman of striking Spanish heritage and fierce passion, waits to marry the handsome Sir Victor Catheron. But the shadows of the past intrude. Victor's former engagement to Inez, buried family secrets, and a devastating accusation converge to destroy everything she holds dear. As society rushes to judgment, Inez must fight not only for her freedom but for her very name in a world quick to condemn a woman without proof. May Agnes Fleming, one of the nineteenth century's most prolific sensation writers, crafts a story that moves from romance to courtroom drama with relentless momentum. This is Victorian fiction at its most transgressive: a page-turner that takes seriously the precarity of women accused, the violence of rumor, and the terrible cost of buried truths.
