A Successful Shadow; Or, a Detective's Successful Quest

A desperate mother arrives at detective Jack Alvarez's door, her daughter Amalie vanished into the shadowed streets. But this is no simple missing persons case. The girl has disappeared into a web of aristocracy and old money, her absence tied to a fortune that could reshape lives and a mysterious baron whose smiles conceal sharper intentions. As Alvarez pulls at the thread, he finds himself chasing Amalie through drawing rooms and dark alleys alike, past facades of respectability into a world where the wealthy guard secrets worth killing for. This is detective fiction in its pulp infancy, when the genre was still learning its rhythms. Old Sleuth delivers a brisk, propulsive tale of inheritance, deception, and the particular peril thatbefalls young women in a world of old money and older secrets.
