This was radical thinking that provoked fury, imitation, parody, and plagiarism in equal measure. Defoe couldn't resist echoing it; Berkeley quietly borrowed from it; Gilbert and Sullivan mocked it nearly two centuries later in Princess Ida. The controversy was so intense that Astell was forced to defend herself in a lengthy sequel.
