A Rough Sketch of Modern Paris: Or, Letters on Society, Manners, Public Curiosities, and Amusements, in That Capital

An English traveler arrives in Paris in 1803, four years after the Revolution has ended, and begins writing letters home about what he finds. Through his eyes, we see a city still smoking from upheaval, its streets humming with new energies and old tensions. Lemaistre records everything: the customs officials who scrutinize him at the border, the lodgings he struggles to secure, the architecture that speaks of both grandeur and rupture. But what rivets him most is the social experiment unfolding before him, an entire society rebuilding itself, its manners reshaped, its hierarchies destabilized. As an Englishman, he cannot help but measure French life against his own, and in that comparison emerge sharp insights about what makes each nation strange and singular. These letters capture a moment that would not last: the brief, volatile window when revolutionary fervor had cooled but the new order had not yet hardened into convention. For anyone fascinated by early 19th-century Europe, by the drama of societies in transformation, or simply by the ancient pleasure of traveling somewhere foreign and trying to make sense of it, this book offers a front-row seat to one of the world's most electrifying cities at a turning point in history.
