A Project for Flying: In Earnest at Last!

In 1871, when the science of flight remained a fever dream, Robert Hardley dared to imagine humanity conquering the skies. This remarkable treatise captures the audacious optimism of an age when brilliant inventors believed they could crack the secrets of aerial navigation through sheer ingenuity and persistence. Hardley dismantles the failures of balloon technology with sharp criticism, arguing that humanity has been looking in the wrong direction for too long. The author presents his "Instructor" - an ingenious contraption designed to teach would-be aviators the principles of flight through inclined planes, a lightweight framework, and an Archimedean screw for propulsion. Hardley applies rigorous experiments with weight and balance, insisting that with systematic scientific approach, humanity stands on the precipice of airborne travel. He draws on historical examples of innovation to bolster his case that the dream of flight is not merely possible but imminent. For modern readers, this text serves as a fascinating artifact - a window into the hopes and limitations of pre-Wright Brothers aviation thought. It captures that precious moment before success, when the dream of flight seemed both impossible and inevitable.
