A New History of Blue Beard: For the Amusement of Little Lack Beard, and His Pretty Sisters
1804
The tale that taught generations to fear the locked door. Blue Beard is rich, powerful, and monstrous. His new bride Fatima has been given everything in his vast castle every key on a golden ring except entry to one small chamber. Her sister's dangerous whisper drives her to unlock the forbidden door, and what she finds there a room of bodies, the previous wives who came before her is enough to shatter any illusion of safety. Blue Beard discovers her defiance and prepares to add her to his collection of the dead. But Fatima is not without champion. Her true love Selim arrives in time, and in a dramatic confrontation, Blue Beard falls. The lovers unite. This 1804 version of Perrault's dark fairy tale hasn't lost its power to chill. It's a stark warning about the violence hidden behind wealth and charm, about the terrible price of forbidden knowledge, and about the women who didn't survive to tell their stories. For readers who want their fairy tales with teeth.
