A House-Boat on the Styx

What if death was just the beginning of an eternal dinner party with every famous person who ever lived? That's the audacious premise of Bangs's 1895 comic fantasy, which imagines the underworld not as a realm of shadows but as an oddly civilized club where the recently deceased mingle with the legends of history and literature. The story opens with Charon, that grim ferryman of Greek myth, discovering to his horror that a luxurious house-boat has appeared on the Styx, threatening his centuries-old monopoly on soul-transport. His panic gives way to bewilderment when he learns he's been appointed janitor to this peculiar new establishment. The remaining chapters unfold as a series of witty encounters: Achilles debates with Shakespeare, Sir Walter Raleigh conspires with Confucius, and the absurd logistics of eternal existence become fodder for sharp, gentle satire. Bangs plays a delightful game of literary what-if, letting his shades speak in their expected voices while navigating the petty concerns of the dead: reputation, status, and who gets the best cabin. It's whimsical, sometimes prescient (the house-boat floats into a sequel), and quietly funny throughout.
