A Fountain Sealed

In a stark Boston winter, three friends gather in a quietly devastated drawing room to reckon with grief, duty, and what they owe to the people they love. Mary Colton, Rose Packer, and Jack Pennington orbit around their absent friend Imogen Upton, who is navigating the raw aftermath of her father's death while trapped in a suffocating relationship with her mother. Mary sees Imogen's steadfastness as a kind of grace; Rose sees it as something closer to self-destruction. Their debates about what loyalty demands, what sacrifice costs, and whether goodness can survive social expectation crack open the novel's careful surfaces. Anne Douglas Sedgwick writes with psychological precision about the small violences of familial obligation and the courage required to remain tender in a world that punishes it. This is a novel about grief as a mirror: it reveals who we actually are when everything external falls away.
