A Beginner's History of Philosophy, Vol. 1: Ancient and Mediæval Philosophy

Before there were podcasts or video lectures, there was this book: a clear, patient guide through two thousand years of human thought, written in an era when authors still assumed their readers could follow a complex argument without hand-holding. Cushman begins with the Presocratics and moves through the Socratic moment, Plato's dialogues, Aristotle's systematic genius, then crosses the philosophical divide into the Christian Middle Ages, where Augustine reconciles Plato with scripture and Aquinas builds a synthesis that would shape Western civilization for centuries. What distinguishes this volume is its balance: it respects the difficulty of these ideas without drowning readers in technical jargon, and it treats each philosopher as a living thinker wrestling with real problems rather than a monument to be reverently catalogued. The writing has an early twentieth-century confidence that modern textbooks often lack, a sense that philosophy matters and that you, the reader, are capable of understanding it. Whether you're a student encountering these ideas for the first time or an adult returning to questions that have haunted humanity since antiquity, this volume offers something increasingly rare: a thorough, thoughtful introduction written by someone who actually taught the subject for decades.
