500 of the Best Cockney War Stories

Five hundred voices from the trenches, transcribed in their own words and their own dialect. This formidable anthology gathers the best Cockney war stories published in the London Evening News during the Great War, preserving the rhyming slang, the dropped H's, the irrepressible cheerfulness of London's working-class soldiers. General Sir Ian Hamilton provides a foreword that acknowledges what the military brass often missed: the human dimension of war, the way ordinary men made meaning through humor when facing the unimaginable. These are not heroic dispatches or officer's accounts. They are jokes told in dugouts, tall tales swapped between raids, affectionate ribbing of the lads from the East End. The Cockney voice emerges here in all its warmth and darkness, a dialect that turned horror into melody and fear into a laugh. For anyone seeking the authentic, unfiltered experience of World War I from below, told by men who were there and refused to be silenced.
