戲中戲

A fictional narrative likely written in the late 19th century. The story centers around the intertwining lives of the main characters, 譚楚玉 (Tan Chuyu), a poor scholar, and 劉藐姑 (Liu Miaogu), the daughter of a famous actress, who navigate the complexities of love, ambition, and societal expectations within the backdrop of the theatrical world. The opening of the story introduces us to 譚楚玉, who has been forced to leave his home due to poverty and the scorn of former acquaintances. While traveling, he hears of a talented actress named 劉絳仙 (Liu Jiangxian), which piques his interest. The narrative gives us a glimpse into both the struggles faced by Chuyu as he seeks success in his craft and the sharp contrasts between reality and illusion in the theater, especially as the dynamic between Liu Miaogu and Tan Chuyu begins to evolve. Their interactions suggest a complex relationship influenced by both their individual aspirations and external pressures from society and family.
