Ο Γεροστάθης; Ή Αναμνήσεις Της Παιδικής Μου Ηλικίας

Set in a remote village of Epirus in the years before the Greek War of Independence, this tender novel centers on Γεροστάθης, a seventy-year-old sage whose weathered face and snow-white hair belie a vitality that still commands respect. When a poor student named Konstantinos refuses money for new Easter clothes, insisting instead that it be sent to his struggling parents, the old man's heart cracks open, flooding him with memories of his own beloved mother and father. What follows is a cascade of stories, moral lessons, and accumulated wisdom passed from elder to youth, each tale a thread in the tapestry of what it means to live with honor, gratitude, and love. Written in the late 19th century by Leon Melas, this book pulses with something increasingly rare: faith in the human capacity for selflessness, and the conviction that the greatest inheritance is not money but the example we leave behind. It is a book for readers who cherish the quiet dignity of rural life, the weight of unspoken family bonds, and the peculiar ache of remembering those who taught us how to be good.
