William E. Sellers

William E. Sellers was a pioneering mechanical engineer and inventor whose contributions significantly shaped the field of manufacturing in the 19th century. Best known for his design of the United States standard screw thread, Sellers filed over 90 patents throughout his career, many of which focused on improving the efficiency and accessibility of machine tools. His screw thread design, which simplified the manufacturing process for ordinary mechanics and machinists, was a notable advancement over the more complex system proposed by Joseph Whitworth, and it remains in use today. In addition to his engineering achievements, Sellers was a prominent businessman and abolitionist. As the president of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, he advocated for technical education and the adoption of standardized practices in engineering. He led the influential machine tool firm William Sellers & Co., which played a crucial role in the industrial growth of the United States during the latter half of the 19th century.
