Richard M. Russell was a prominent American politician and lawyer, known for his service as a United States Representative from Massachusetts. Born into a politically active family in Cambridge, he was the son of Governor William Russell. After completing his education at Harvard University and Harvard Law School, Russell served in World War I, where he rose to the rank of first lieutenant. His military service was a precursor to his political career, which began with his election to the Cambridge City Council, followed by a term as Mayor of Cambridge. In 1935, Russell was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fourth Congress, where he served until 1937. Although he faced challenges in subsequent elections, including unsuccessful bids for reelection and other congressional seats, he continued his legal practice in Boston after leaving Congress. Russell's political career, though relatively brief, was marked by his commitment to public service and his contributions to local governance, reflecting the values of his upbringing and education. He passed away in 1977, leaving behind a legacy of civic engagement and dedication to his community.
