In addition to his fiction, Gunn was a respected academic, serving as a professor emeritus of English and founding director of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas. His scholarly work earned him the Hugo Award for 'Best Related Work' in 1983 for his book on Isaac Asimov, among other accolades. In recognition of his lifetime achievements, he was named the 24th Grand Master by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America in 2007 and was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2015. Gunn's legacy endures through his influential writings and his dedication to the study and promotion of science fiction as a serious literary form.
