Anna Milo Upjohn was an American artist, illustrator, author, and dedicated relief worker, whose career spanned several decades and encompassed a variety of artistic endeavors. After graduating from high school, she pursued her passion for art, receiving training in New York before honing her skills in Paris under the tutelage of notable artists Claudio Castelucho and Lucien Simon. Upjohn gained recognition in the early 20th century for her evocative portraits and charming depictions of children, as well as for her illustrations in books and magazines, which showcased her unique artistic style and sensitivity to her subjects. With the outbreak of the First World War, Upjohn's focus shifted towards humanitarian efforts. She became deeply involved in relief work, first aiding refugees in Paris and later supporting devastated communities in France and Belgium. Her commitment to this cause led her to serve as a staff artist for the American Red Cross from 1921 to 1931, where she created impactful visual representations of the war's toll. Throughout her life, Upjohn traveled extensively and lived in various cities, including New York City, Ithaca, and Washington, D.C. Her legacy is marked not only by her artistic contributions but also by her compassionate service during a time of great need.
