Alban Charles Phidias Arnold was an English cricketer and British Army officer, whose promising athletic career was tragically cut short by World War I. Born in Tattenhall, Cheshire, he received his education at Twyford School and Malvern College, where he first showcased his cricketing talent. Arnold went on to study at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he played for the Cambridge University Cricket Club. He made his first-class debut against the touring South African team and had notable performances for both Cambridge and Hampshire, accumulating significant runs and earning a blue for his participation in The University Match against Oxford University. Despite his burgeoning cricket career, Arnold's life took a fateful turn with the outbreak of the First World War. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, and later joined the Royal Fusiliers. Arnold saw action during the Battle of the Somme, where he was killed in action on July 7, 1916. His untimely death at the age of 23 left a void in the cricketing community, with Wisden noting his potential to develop into a cricketer of very high class. Arnold is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, a testament to his sacrifice and the promise that was never fully realized in the world of cricket.
“EDGAR ALLAN POE was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, the second of three children born to actors David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins.””
