Yesterdays with Authors

In this intimate memoir, James Thomas Fields, a 19th-century publisher and bookseller, invites readers into his personal memories of the literary giants he called friends. This isn't formal biography but something rarer: warm, conversational recollections of Dickens reading aloud with theatrical flair, Hawthorne's quiet intensity, Thackeray's sharp wit. Fields describes the portraits hanging in his study as "silent companions" that spark conversations about their personalities and quirks. He writes with the easy authority of someone who was there, who witnessed these authors not as monuments but as living, breathing people navigating the anxieties and joys of creative life. The book captures a vanished world where publishers knew their authors personally, where literary fame hadn't yet calcified into mythology. For anyone who's ever wanted to glimpse the human beings behind the great books, Fields offers something precious: proof that the authors we revere were also simply people, complicated and fascinating, seen through the affectionate eyes of a man who felt blessed simply to have known them.
