Wynken, Blynken, and Nod
A beloved bedtime ritual for over a century, Eugene Field's 1889 poem has lulled generations of children into sweet dreams. The story follows three magical little figures - Wynken, Blynken, and Nod - who sail through the night sky in a wooden shoe, casting their golden threads to catch falling stars. The poem's gentle, lilting verses paint a tender portrait of drowsiness and wonder; each character embodies a sleepy child's blinking eyes and nodding head. The imagery is pure celestial enchantment: a wooden shoe becomes a vessel, the heavens transform into an ocean, and stars become fish to be caught. Originally titled "Dutch Lullaby," the poem draws on Dutch folklore while creating something entirely its own. Parents return to this book night after night, its melody as soothing now as it was when first published.
