Women of the War

This is history written while the shells still fell. Published in 1917, Barbara McLaren's account captures something no later chronicle can: the raw, unfolding astonishment of women stepping into roles society had never imagined for them. With the Great War still raging, McLaren documents nurses running military hospitals, doctors performing dangerous battlefield work, women driving ambulances through shell fire, and factory hands keeping Britain fed and armed. The introduction by Prime Minister H. H. Asquith himself testifies to how unprecedented this moment was. Through profiles of figures like Dr. Garrett Anderson, Dr. Flora Murray, and Lady Paget, McLaren offers portraits of women who simply refused to wait for permission. This is not retrospective history. It is a dispatch from the front lines of transformation, written when the world was still learning what women could do. For anyone interested in feminist history, World War I, or the roots of modern gender roles, this book offers a window into a pivotal moment, recorded by someone watching it unfold.
