Women in All Ages and in All Countries, V 1-10

A monumental ten-volume reference work from 1907, attempting nothing less than a comprehensive survey of women's lives across every age and nation. Organized geographically and historically, these volumes gather scholarly essays on women in ancient Greece and Rome, early Christianity, the Byzantine Empire, and cultures spanning from the Middle East to the Americas. This was an ambitious, perhaps revolutionary project for its era: treating women's history as worthy of systematic documentation rather than mere footnote. The scholarship reflects its time, of course, with period-typical assumptions and blind spots that modern readers will recognize. Yet the mere existence of this project speaks to a growing recognition, even then, that women's experiences across civilizations deserved serious historical attention. For researchers, feminists, and anyone curious about how women lived, loved, ruled, and resisted across millennia, this remains a fascinating primary document of early feminist historiography.
