West Virginia Trees

A practical field guide from 1920 that opens a window onto the forests of a different era. A.B. Brooks intended this book for farmers, teachers, and anyone who wanted to name the trees around them, simplifying the technical language of botany without sacrificing accuracy. The result is a work that functions as both identification manual and time capsule: you can still use these keys to walk through the woods of West Virginia and name what you see, but you're also holding a document from a moment when those forests were still largely intact, when a person might learn their trees as a matter of practical necessity. Brooks includes roughly 101 native species and a handful of introduced ones, organized by leaf and fruit characteristics so that a specimen can be identified in hand. The writing has a quiet dignity, describing not just botanical features but the character of individual species - the way certain bark looks in winter light, the particular quality of a tree's presence in the landscape. For readers interested in natural history, regional identity, or the roots of American environmental writing, this century-old guide offers something increasingly rare: a way to see a place through knowledgeable eyes.
