Weeds

Weeds, written by Edith Summers Kelley and published in 1923, is a naturalistic novel set in rural Scott County, Kentucky. The story follows Judith Pippinger Blackford, a woman yearning for freedom and self-expression, as she grapples with the harsh realities of farm life and societal expectations. Based on Kelley's own experiences as a tobacco farmer, the novel explores themes of familial duty and personal ambition, and has been recognized as a significant work in American literature, particularly in women's studies. Although initially overlooked, it was rediscovered in the 1970s and has since gained acclaim as a classic.
