Walks Near Edinburgh

At the close of the nineteenth century, Margaret Warrender set out to preserve what Edinburgh was beginning to forget. This collection of walks through the city's forgotten corners reads less like a guidebook and more like a conversation with a learned friend who knows every crumbling wall and family vault by name. Warrender begins in Bruntisfield, tracing the lineages of its old houses and the figures who passed through them, weaving personal observation with archival research in a style that feels both scholarly and warmly intimate. She leads readers away from the well-trodden Royal Mile and Princes Street, into the villages and fields that once surrounded the capital, now swallowed by urban growth. The book captures a city at a turning point, its medieval relics still standing but modernization already reshaping the landscape around them. For readers who delight in the particular pleasure of learning a place through those who truly knew it, Warrender offers something rare: not tourism, but companionship in discovery.
