Twenty Years Around the World

In February 1839, a young American named John Guy Vassar board a ship bound for Havana and sets into motion two decades of wandering that will carry him to every inhabited continent. What begins as a young man's grand tour becomes something far more ambitious: a patient, wide-eyed reckoning with the sheer variety of human life. Vassar arrives in Cuba as an observer of landscapes and customs, describing the fortress-lined harbor, the singing laborers at the wharf, the strange wheeled chairs called Volantes. But this is merely the opening movement. Over the next twenty years, he crosses the Atlantic to Europe, pushes into the African interior, spirals eastward through Asia's ancient civilizations, and circles back through the Americas. He hikes the Alps, catches fever in West Africa, trades with merchants in Istanbul, and watches the Pacific break against shores no American has named. The prose is Victorian in its leisurely detail, yet Vassar possesses a traveler's essential gift: the ability to see strangers as genuinely strange, and therefore worth remembering. This is travel literature before tourism existed, written by a man who had no itinerary, only appetite.
