Trenches

Frederic Manning

The Trenches is a poem by Australian poet Frederic Manning, written during World War I. Manning, who served in the King's Shropshire Light Infantry and fought at the Battle of the Somme, captures the harrowing experiences of soldiers in the trenches. The poem vividly depicts the horrors of war and the psychological toll it takes on those who endure it. It was featured in the Fortnightly Poetry project on October 30, 2011, as part of a remembrance initiative.
